What is an effective learning method for a toddler? Personally, I feel that the Montessori philosophy works beautifully for children 18 months to 3 years old. If you are unfamiliar with the Montessori method, it focuses on independence, freedom within limits and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical and social development. In a nutshell, Maria Montessori believed that when a child is given the freedom to choose within a prepared environment, he / she will learn and develop optimally.
Learning begins at home, and I highly recommend incorporating the Montessori philosophy into your home environment! The key is to ask yourself “What can my child do for himself now, and how can I change the environment to spur and allow him to be engaged in those things?” The next is to trust that your child is capable and resilient, that they have the innate drive to learn and thrive on their own without needing your constant ‘help’.
